The world of animals in films. The animal world has always been a fascinating and mysterious sphere. For this reason, it is also often represented in films, which tell the most varied stories, from the great friendships between domestic animals and man to those depicting the wildest nature.

The search for emotion, the desire for knowledge and identification lead the general public to love films in which animals and their adventures become the protagonists.

Films for the youngest

Like books, films revolving around nature and its inhabitants are also numerous and range from films designed primarily for the youngest children to great masterpieces for all ages.

The first group very often belongs to animated films, in which the animal world is projected and modelled on our own to impart a moral or a model of behaviour and entertain and amuse.

Let us recall, for example, the classics that accompanied the childhood of many of us: ‘The Lion King‘, ‘The Jungle Book‘, ‘Bambi‘, ‘101 Dalmatians‘, ‘The Fox and the Hound‘, but also more recent titles such as ‘Madagascar‘, ‘Spirit‘, ‘Sing‘, ‘Pets‘ and many others. Here, animals are the focus of extraordinary narratives, which, on the one hand, make you dream but, on the other hand, also make you reflect.

Not only animated films but many other films designed for children and audiences of all ages in which the animal world is the undisputed protagonist. Let’s start with some of the much-loved films from the 1990s, such as ‘Beethoven’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Free Willy – A Friend to Rescue’ and ‘Babe, Brave Pig’.

These feature, respectively, a St. Bernard troublemaker, a gigantic and terrifying white shark, an orca who, thanks to the affection and sensitivity of a child, rises to freedom, and a piglet, who through his intelligence, manages to earn a place among the talking animals on a farm.

More recent productions include ‘Belle & Sebastien‘, ‘Mia and the White Lion‘, ‘On the Wings of Adventure‘ and ‘A Four-legged Journey‘. “Belle & Sebastien” is the story of a young boy who, during the Second World War, helps Jews cross the Alps to escape from the Nazis and, with the help of his beautiful white dog, tries to prevent the enemies’ plan from succeeding.

“Mia and the White Lion’, on the other hand, tells the story of a little girl and her deep relationship with a lion. Despite the strong affection that binds them, the little girl decides to run away with him to guarantee him the survival and freedom he deserves.

“On the Wings of Adventure” is a film inspired by the story of ornithologist Christian Moullec, starring a father and son committed to the goal of saving geese sent to extinction.

The animal world is fascinating and mysterious, so it is also depicted in films.

Their crazy but benevolent plan is to direct the birds on an alternative, less risky migratory route via their hang-glider. This journey will lead them to discover the beauty of unspoilt nature but also of themselves. Finally, ”A four-legged journey”, a story of hope and love starring Belle, a dog who, over two and a half years, makes a long and arduous journey into the wilderness in search of his beloved owner. A particular highlight was ‘Life of Pi’, a gripping film based on the novel of the same name, in which adventure, survival and animals take on a much deeper and more reflective meaning.

The film tells of the shipwreck at sea of a 16-year-old boy, Pi, who, to survive, must fight with the ferocious animals he shares a boat with, including a fearsome Bengal tiger.

Between emotion and gratitude

Also worth mentioning are the precious films in which the stories of the faithful and mutual affection between man and his domestic animal.

Empathy and emotion are the primary emotions aroused by these narratives, which succeed in touching the deepest chords of the souls and stirring a sense of recognition and deep gratitude for one’s best friend.

The latter, the most recent (2019), is the story of Enzo, a Golden retriever whom a race car driver adopts Denny, who in time will be able to rely solely on his most trusted friend, especially in the most challenging and most terrible situations. For Denny, Enzo’s closeness, support and love will overcome time and the natural evolution of life.

Io & Marley“, based on the novel of the same name, is the narration of an ordinary family whose days are enriched by the presence of a playful and mischievous dog. His affection and company prove to be irreplaceable, indescribable and unforgettable.

Finally, ‘Hachiko‘ is based on the true story of the Akita dog of the same name, who became famous for his remarkable loyalty to his owner.

The film tells this story of love and brotherly friendship with great sincerity and delicacy, showing pets’ infinite goodness and gratitude for their family.
