It all began after the loss of a beloved friend
“After many years of struggling, I finally took a class from an artist named Phil Siegel. This was when everything changed. I started focusing more on art and less on function and working more on making it clean and uniform rather than just sellable.
“About ten years ago, I lost a dear friend. I was given a spoonful of his ashes that I had just put on my bookshelf for several years.
“One day, it occurred to me, and I turned it into a memorial marble for jewellery. Several friends thought it was an excellent idea and asked me to make a commemorative glass. After that, it just exploded in an avalanche.
Cameron has a unique technique for infusing ash that he prefers to keep secret, having spent years working hard to perfect it. “The ash puts a lot of stress on the glass while working with it, making it very difficult to work with,” he explained. “I have had many glass artists contact me and ask me how I do it. Then, finally, I would be ready to teach a class one day.
The job is sad for Cameron, as many of his clients are still grieving. Cameron takes the time to make a personal connection with his clients, so he often listens to the background behind requests for custom pieces. “One of the hardest parts of my job is listening to stories about SIDS. It eats me up inside. I get a lot of sad e-mails and often need to take breaks from reading,” he said.
Of course, there is also the other side. Cameron’s craftsmanship produces pieces that are beyond art and become cherished memories that can make a difference in his clients’ lives. “One of my favourite parts of my job is the smiles and tears I get from my customers,” he says.
“They love the work I do for them and the meaning behind it. With each passing day, I become more and more grateful for the people in my life and the time I spend with them. Doing this kind of work brings out the love in my life.
