Retractable leashes are popular because they allow dogs more freedom during walks and are not as restrictive as standard leashes. However, using a lead when walking a dog is to keep the dog under control and safe. Unfortunately, these retractable collars very often do the opposite.
Many problems with retractable leads can be reduced if you are responsible and use them conscientiously; however, they are still more likely to cause accidents and injuries than standard 6-foot flat leads. Why take these risks?
1. The retractable leash is too long
Using one of these leashes means your dog can get far enough away from you to get into trouble (some leashes extend up to 8 metres). When your dog is far from you, it is impossible to protect him, and a situation can quickly become dangerous.
Like the experience I had the other day, a dog may run into the middle of the street or find unwelcome contact with another dog. Unfortunately, once the advantage is extended, you cannot help quickly; sometimes, it may be too late to intervene.
2. A retractable leash can cause injuries, even serious ones
If you get trapped in the leash, and the leash comes into contact with your skin (hands, legs) while being pulled quickly, you will get a nasty burn or friction cut. This may even result in amputation.
These injuries occur most frequently on the one hand, but if the dog runs in circles, tangling you, these injuries can also occur on other parts of the body.
Many people have been pulled off their feet using these leashes, which can cause bone fractures. Dogs can also injure themselves, usually on their paws or tails, and similar injuries. The sudden jerk in the neck can cause neck injuries, torn tracheas and spinal injuries. In addition, people have been bitten by their dogs while trying to untangle them from these leashes.
3. Retractable leashes are dangerous to other people
They can be a nuisance to other people as the length of a retractable leash allows your dog to run towards people before you have enough time to control him. As a result, he may run and jump on someone, frightening a child or someone wary of dogs. In addition, it might make another dog feel threatened, as some dogs adopt a posture when pulling that can look aggressive to another dog, who might then decide to react.
4. The retractable leash handle is heavy
The heavy and bulky handles can easily be pulled out of the hand or dropped. This can result in a loose dog, which is bad enough. However, if the handle is dropped, the noise of dragging behind your dog can be very frightening for him.
Imagine, especially if your dog is a bit fearful, how he must feel when the scary, noisy object retracts as he tries to escape but cannot because it is gaining on him. This could result in a persistent fear of leashes for your dog.
5. Retractable leashes are made up of many parts
They can malfunction. They consist of many parts that can fail or break. For example, the cable can detach from the handle, the locking mechanism can fail, and the thin line can break. If any of these events happen (and believe me, Murphy’s Law, they do), you will lose control of your dog, or a broken part could cause injury to you or your dog.
6. The retractable leash teaches your dog to pull
They are a terrible idea from a training point of view. They train dogs to pull while on the leash because they learn that pulling extends it.
To teach your dog not to pull on the leash, it is imperative not to allow him to pull because if he is inconsistent, your dog will try to remove it. After all, sometimes it works! Therefore, teaching your dog to walk politely on the lead beside you without pulling is much better.
So, please think twice before using a retractable leash, as they are dangerous and cause injury to people and dogs. I have witnessed these clues wreaking havoc, and I know other dog care experts who have and feel as strongly as I do about this dangerous invention.
