An exclusive restaurant for dogs has opened in San Francisco. If going out to dinner with your four-legged friend usually means only having his company at the table, dogs are the absolute protagonists in the Dogue restaurant, and their owners only accompany them.

Pastries and tasting menus

Owner and head chef Rahmi Massarweh said the restaurant is unique because it is the first in the country to serve a tasting menu exclusively for dogs. “We conceived it as a restaurant for people, but the guest of honour is the dog,” he said. Dogue offers dog treats for $5, a tasting menu for $75 upwards, and organic and seasonal products.

Dogue is a restaurant opened in San Francisco that prepares dishes exclusively for dogs.

Owners can choose dishes for their pets, such as hand-cut filet mignon tartare topped with poached quail egg, salted beef liver flan in an eggshell, goat kefir broth with turmeric and cod liver oil, and spirulina meringue cloud with marigold oil, rosemary, and krill.

The menu is served only on Sundays and consists of three courses, while on other days, an inviting counter displays tempting sugar-free pastries for dog snacks.

How did the idea of a restaurant for dogs come?

In addition to its food, Dogue also has a number of amenities for dogs, including a water fountain, a play area, and a grooming station. The cafe also offers a variety of services, such as dog walking and pet sitting.

Massarweh worked in the catering industry for about 12 years, leaving the profession in 2015 to open a daycare with his wife. He transferred his passion for cooking into the dishes he prepared daily for his dogs and soon began receiving orders for the daycare’s customer-owners dogs. He then sought advice and collaboration from a veterinarian to ensure his prepared food was balanced and had suitable nutritional properties. Hence, the idea is to open a specific business in the dog food sector.

Massarweh still tests the preparation of dishes with his four dogs; all ingredients are always fresh and in season. “Our dogs give us so much, and the best I can do for them is to prepare a healthy meal that looks good,” said the chef.

Owner Rahmi Massarweh prepares everything. He is an experienced chef who has fed his four dogs fresh, raw food since they were puppies. Dogue is part of a growing movement to serve dogs nutritious, freshly cooked meals rather than packaged kibble full of fillers.

In Florida, a chef started a dog food company after his restaurant closed during the pandemic. A Sacramento chef behind one of the city’s best sushi restaurants also feeds dogs professionally.
