World Dog Surfing is a competition open to all
.Participation is open to all dogs, with or without pedigree, divided by size. Surfing can be done solo, in pairs with another dog or with one’s owner and is judged on the length of the ride, technique, size and strength of the wave.
In addition to the actual competition, the championship hosts a series of parallel events, such as a dog beauty contest, fundraisers supporting abandoned animals, and initiatives to promote their adoption.
Dogs trained to rescue people in the water and dogs that have taken up surfing following their owners’ passion participate in surfing competitions.
Such is the case of Faith, a 10-year-old female who came first in the large category. “She was found in a garage and was afraid of many things as a puppy,” said her owner, James Wall. “When I started taking her to the beach with me, she jumped on the surfboard. So I decided, out of curiosity, to let her try riding the waves, and she hasn’t stopped since.”
Many people bring their dogs to watch the show, hoping they will follow their fellow dogs. “It’s the first time I’ve attended the show, and it’s amazing to see so many dogs surfing together. I hope that following the others will also entice me to practice the same activity,” said a spectator interviewed during the event.
