The dog drinks too much water. He gets up from the couch or his kennel many times a day; every time he comes back from his walk, he puts his snout in the water bowl and doesn’t raise it any more, so much so that you wonder why the dog drinks so much.
This concern is quite common because sometimes our friends can’t seem to get their fill. Sometimes, it is a natural need; other times, there may be several reasons besides the most trivial: thirst.
Here are four possible reasons why your dog drinks so much.
A dog needs to consume between 50 and 80 ml of water daily for every kilo of body weight, and this value also varies according to the dog’s lifestyle, breed and age, medical history, and where it lives.
So, let’s learn to tell if you’re drinking a lot or too much. Only at this point do we consider causes other than normal physiological thirst.
Why does the dog drink so much if it’s not thirsting? There can be four answers:
- Dehydration
- Disease
- Medication
- Nutrition
Dehydration
It is scalding; we are in a torrid area, and our friend has a lot of furs. After a long walk or considerable physical activity, the dog’s body needs to replenish lost fluids. Water also gives refreshment.
Let’s not be surprised, then. But if our friend is dehydrated to a level that we need to worry about, we may see other symptoms: he sleeps too much and has a dry tongue and gums.
Let’s call the vet! He will tell us that he should not drink too much. So instead, give him one or two tablespoons of water every ten minutes and follow medical advice.
Diseases
Many conditions can lead to dehydration or excessive thirst. If our friend has liver problems, diabetes, Cushing’s disease, tumours or kidney disease, and infections and fever, he may need to drink a lot. Let’s talk to our veterinarian. It may be time to intervene.
Medicines
Sometimes, some medications can give you excessive thirst, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, heart failure medications and more. Please consult your vet; it may be time to reduce the dosage.
Feeding
If our dog eats foods that are too dry or salty and high in sodium, he may develop an excessive thirst. We try not to give foods that are too salty. If he has overeaten sodium, he may have tremors, diarrhoea and vomiting. We hear from the vet and follow his advice.
