Stop the puppy crying at night. One user posed this question to the famous dog trainer Ben Randall. Here are his four tips.
‘Hi Ben — we recently got a puppy and he’s been wonderful… except at night. He keeps crying out for us, all through the night; it’s like have a newborn baby again, and we don’t know what to do. Can you help?’ — D.W., Kent
How to stop your puppy from crying. Make your puppy’s bed the place where he wants to be
Start by turning your new dog’s sleeping place into where he loves to stay. Crate training a puppy can help give them a safe and comfortable sleep.
Add some favourite toys or a blanket in their crate or bed area, things they usually only play with or have with them when they are there. It will make it a relaxing place for them, a positive space that is theirs and theirs alone.
What do you do if your puppy won’t stop crying? First, do not let them shout for more than a few minutes.
There is considerable debate about this among humans as well as dogs. For example, how long should you let a child or puppy cry before you go to comfort them? You must consider two things: first, will leaving them alone be bad or good? And second, how long should you leave them?
If you let your dog cry for 10 minutes or more, he will put himself in such a state of stress that he will turn his bed or crate into an unfavourable environment. In addition, the pressure can cause scratching, chewing, diarrhoea and psychological problems with getting into a crate in other contexts.
Leave them for five minutes, then walk over to comfort them by stroking them in a calm voice. Then I bend down and give them a firm command to leave, usually in a reassuring tone, but this will depend on your dog. For example, if it is a German shepherd tearing up a crate, a firmer tone may be required!
After that, I let them touch and smell me, but I closed the door and went out. I want the dog to think: ‘I’m in a nice place, and I don’t want to go out, but if I do, Daddy’s gone, and he’s gone for now, but he’s coming back. So I’ve not been left.’
How to stop your puppy from crying. If the puppy crying starts again, turn back, but not too fast.
Letting a dog cry long enough to be stressed or upset is counterproductive, but so is going back to them immediately every time they cry. If you do this, your pet effectively gives you a dose of training to remember the dog! However, a few minutes is enough to prevent this; go back, comfort them again, and leave the room as you did before.
How to stop your puppy from crying. Let their bed be a safe space at any time of the day.
My puppies often come out of the kitchen into the hallway near the stairs and stand or sit beside their cage. When they do, I leave it open so they can access it and have a safe place to retreat. It also helps dogs who get anxious about visitors or messengers coming to the house: they can retreat to a safe space knowing they can trust you to take care of them.
